Exhibition Catalogue
The Swiss artist Franziska Rutishauser focuses on making visible the abstractness of familiar reality. Motifs are natural elements like plants, water and rock. The human being does not appear figuratively in her works, it is rather thematized as a biotic factor. Her media are painting, drawing, photography and installation. The exhibition reeling to real shows the artist's examination of questions about the age of the Anthropocene. In the most recent works of the series Aggregation-Dark light matter (2015-2016), the colour range red, combined with structures derived from the snapshot of flowing water, creates irritation due to ambiguity in relation to the comparison of reality in the viewer's perception. The artist pursued this factor of irritation over many years, from initially subtle to increasingly obvious disturbances in the pictorial recognition of the real environment.

This publication provides insight into Franziska Rutishauser's current creative phase. The Swiss artist works with painting, photography, installation and drawing. Rutishauser invites us to take a closer look, analyzes the process of seeing itself and thematizes the abstractness of the objective world. Her painting deals with the magical beauty of the visible and with irritating perception.
The catalogue is completed by contributions from the art historians Dr. Margit Im Schlaa and Michael Nungesser.

[...] Mars landscape
Can a real pictoriality become tangible, however, when earth is exchanged during a transformation phase in the city of Berlin and this is registered by the artist's eye? In this process, despite all its anchoring in reality, there is simultaneously an extraterrestrial post-colonialism of modernism. However, this is explicitly not about comparing the real situation in Berlin with the findings of planetary research, but above all about the artist's eye. The area in the Wuhlheide is transformed mentally and perceptively into a Martian landscape during the ploughing of the ground. The perception itself is decisive in this process: what is a practical completion of a task for the building activity becomes a possible colonization of the planet Mars for Franziska R.'s photographic eye. This is strange only at first glance in 2012, because at the same time as Franziska R.'s photographs, a new Mars research mission from NASA was underway. [...] 1

[...] Thus astonishment arises at this pronounced will to abstraction within a subtly representational pictoriality, which appears as an artistic counter-world to the provocative, loud sound of ordinary everyday culture.
